Maritimes Mussel Production Resuming as Ice Clears, Unable to Meet Pent Up Demand

A mussel harvester in Nova Scotia says it could continue to be a difficult year due to lower stock levels, despite the increased demand.
The heavy snowfall this winter interfered with harvesting, but numbers are also down due to a combination of factors including invasive species and predators, says Darlene Meade, one of the owners of AquaPrime Mussel Ranch Ltd. in Ship Harbour.
Record snowfall made it impossible to access leases P.E.I. for close to two months, says Linda Duncan of Prince Edward Island's Mussel Industry Council. She said it's the longest interruption in mussel harvesting on the island in 30 years.
