NEFMC Presses Pause on Alternative Gear-Marking

Fishers who packed a Beauport Hotel ballroom Thursday morning applauded the New England Fishery Management Council's postponement to action to allow for alternative gear-marking for on-demand ropeless lobster traps meant to prevent whales from becoming entangled in their buoy lines.
At issue are marking methods for high-tech ropeless gear that can sit on the sea bottom and be retrieved on-demand without buoys attached to vertical lines, something many fear would conflict with those trawling for fish...
