Whale Entanglements Rose to 97 in 2024, Only 11 Released Successfully

Whale entanglements in fishing gear — both commercial and recreational — for 2024 rose to 95, a 50% increase from 2023’s entanglement count of 64, according to a NOAA Fisheries report released last week.
Successful disentanglements last year were 11 out of 87 live animals, a rescue rate of 12.6%. In 2023, 61 of the 64 confirmed entangled whales were alive. Of those, eleven animals were fully or partially disentangled, for a rescue rate of 18%.
