Changes in the Kuroshio current in Japan to affect fishing operations

The Japan Coast Guard said on Dec. 6 it confirmed--for the first time in 12 years--that the Kuroshio current has been meandering visibly southward in the eastern area of Japan's exclusive economic zone.
Kuroshio, also known as the Japan Current, is the largest ocean current in the seas off Japan. It is a warm current, originating in the area east of the Philippines, that flows northward between Taiwan and the island of Ishigakijima into the East China Sea.
The Sanriku Coast, where the Kuroshio meets the Oyashio (the cold southbound current), is a rich fishing ground.
