Pacific’s Newport Surimi Plant Starts Operations Today

Pacific Seafood’s surimi plant in Newport opened its doors today, taking its first delivery at 8 am.
The plant formerly belonged to Trident, who announced they would not operate it this year. The plant was bought by Pacific, but due to the controversy over anti-trust lawsuits, Pacific asked for and received permission from the Oregon Attorney General to operate the plant.
Once the deal was finalized, the next problem was recruiting workers. The plant operates with about 140 seasonal workers. As of today, they have 110 and they are still adding positions.
Tony Dal Ponte, speaking for Pacific, said they took their first delivery of whiting this morning from the F/V Northern Ram.
