Vessel Slow Speed Zone South of Nantucket in Effect Through September 15 to Protect Right Whales
On Tuesday, following a sighting of North Atlantic right whales, NOAA announced a voluntary vessel speed restriction zone, or Dynamic Management Area (DMA), south of Nantucket.
The whales in question were spotted on August 31. During this time of year right whales are migrating along the Atlantic coast of the U.S. With an estimated 400 whales remaining, a vessel speed restriction zone is being implemented in an effort to protect these endangered whales.
