New York Seeks Federal Disaster Relief for Suffolk Aquaculture After Costly Winter Freeze
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has requested a Secretarial Disaster Designation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for Suffolk County following severe winter conditions that significantly disrupted the region’s aquaculture sector.
Heavy snowfall and prolonged freezing temperatures in February led to an estimated $2.4 million in net losses for local producers. If approved, the designation would allow affected farms to apply for low-interest emergency loans through federal relief programs.
