Gulf of Maine sea surface temperatures remaining unusually warm affecting cod, lobster and shrimp

DIGBY - Sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Maine remained unusually high this fall, according to the newly released Gulf of Maine Region Quarterly Climate Impacts and Outlook. Warmer temperatures in the Gulf have ripple effects throughout the marine ecosystem, and the latest issue of Outlook describes some of the impacts that scientists are seeing on phytoplankton and fisheries.
The Gulf of Maine is near the southern limit for both cod and shrimp.
Warmer waters have been implicated in the decline in shrimp and have likely compounded the management challenges for cod. However, lobster populations in the Bay of Fundy are booming, possibly due to warmer waters and a decrease in cod, which eat young lobster...
