Twenty per cent of South Australia’s oyster growers have had to close up shop and lay off staff because of the toxic algal bloom, making it the worst the state has ever experienced, industry leaders say.
Bringing in $60m annually, oyster growers have been struggling through closures since May after a toxin was found in Spencer Gulf molluscs, while the ones that remained open are facing plummeting market confidence — despite there being nothing wrong with the product.
