A historic cockle fishery operating out of Leigh has earned recognition for its sustainable fishing practices ahead of the season's opening.
The Thames Estuary Cockle Fishery, with ports in Leigh, Whitstable, and Queenborough, has been re-certified under the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) standard for sustainable fishing.
This re-certification demonstrates the fishery's commitment to sustainability and aligns it with global best practices.
The fishery, which was near collapse in the 1980s, first achieved this certification in 2019.
