A Thousand-Mile Swath of Western Alaska Battered by Intense Weekend Storm
An intense storm — the remnants of Pacific typhoon Merdoc — roared through Western Alaska last Saturday, causing severe damage and unprecedented flooding from Bristol Bay north through the Bering Straits to Kotzebue Sound. Residents were warned of the formation and trajectory of storm and did what they could to secure building and protect roads.
The National Weather Service warned of elevated sea levels of up to 12 feet in some areas, with Nome’s sea level predicted to rise 11 feet.
