Canadian Government Highlights Actions to Protect Endangered Right Whales in 2020
The Government of Canada released a list of actions it took in its effort to protect North Atlantic right whales, highlighting moves taken by both Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada.
In 2020, the DFO implemented a season-long fishing area closure protocol in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, based on whale detection. With the expansion of temporary and season-long closures, 35,000 square kilometers was closed to fishing for the season—"an area equivalent to six times the size of Prince Edward Island...”
