Survey Looks at Salmon Farms in Japan
News of salmon farming pops up frequently these days in Japan. Unlike industrial salmon farming in Norway, Chile, or elsewhere, most Japanese farms operate on a small scale, producing less than 100 tons a year in off-shore facilities and land-based farms. Those small farms usually distribute their fish fresh to a local market as a regional specialty. Species farmed include rainbow trout, Donaldson trout, coho salmon, char, cherry trout, land-locked cherry trout, Atlantic salmon, steelhead, and other salmonids.
