Maine DMR Announces New Shellfish Harvesting Area Closure Due to Alexandrium Bloom
While the annual bloom of Alexandrium in southwestern Maine appeared to be declining in recent weeks, Maine's Department of Marine Resources just announced new shellfish harvesting closures due to the biotoxin.
Alexandrium produces toxic harmful algal blooms that can cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning. Southwestern Maine experiences a bloom of Alexandrium every May, which effects oysters, mussels and clams.
