Gulf of Mexico 'Dead Zone' Forecasted to Reach 7,829 Square Miles
NOAA released their forecast for this summer's Gulf of Mexico "dead zone" and the area is expected to be approximately 7,829 square miles. The dead zone is forecasted to be particularly large this year due to the "abnormally high spring rainfall in many parts of the Mississippi River watershed."
