Oregon Readies Marketing Push on Dungeness Crab, as State Hopes Tests Show Crab is Safe to Eat
The Dungeness crab industry outside of California is working with retailers to assure customers that crabs are available and safe to eat. Trade groups are preparing campaigns to educate consumers that not all of the Pacific Northwest’s Dungeness crabs are carrying high levels of domic acid. Oregon expects to get its test results back on the biotoxin levels no later than early next week. “We want everyone to enjoy the Dungeness crab eating experience and you can be assured that product from Oregon that reaches the shelves has gone through rigorous quality control,” said Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission Executive Director Hugh Link.
Russia’s Pollock landings from the Far East fishery are up 6 percent through November to just under 1.50 million pounds. Meanwhile, cod catches out of the North Basin are down about 15 percent. Altogether, Russian fish landings are up over 5 percent for the year.
In other news ASMI is part of an undertaking with several of Alaska’s representatives to eliminate the misuse of the Alaskan brand on seafood labels. Mislabeling and traceability issues have plagued Alaskan Pollock, crab and salmon primarily since the brand commands premium sales value and recognition.
Finally, the Philippines announced its intent to turn General Santos City and the nearby Saragani province in major white shrimp producing regions. The plan was announced at the 10th National Shrimp Congress in GenSan. The goal is to raise output to 130,000 tons.
