2015 Worst Year for Tilapia in China as Exports Fall, Domestic Sales Efforts Make Little Headway
Chinese tilapia processors are struggling this year from a decline in global and domestic demand and lower prices. Operators say 2015 has been among the worse years in business since sharply lower market prices are offsetting increases in exports to new markets, like Africa. At the same time exports to traditional markets in the US and EU--also lowered-priced--are on the decline. Processors also note an inability to increase domestic sales interest for tilapia. Meanwhile, a global crackdown on antibiotic is starting to hinder processors from exporting tilapia to both traditional and alternative markets.
The California Dept. of Fish and Game will hold an emergency meeting today where they are certain to delay the start of the recreational Dungeness Crab season, scheduled to open November 7th. The indefinite delay is the result of severely high levels of domoic acid detected in the fishery. According to John Sackton, it is now highly likely that officials will delay the commercial season scheduled to start on November 15. Sackton adds that this is yet another instance where warming ocean waters are having a direct impact on a major commercial fishery.
In other news, the new Canadian fisheries Minister in the Liberal government is from Nunavut - Hunter Tootoo. There are rumors he wore seal fur to his swearing in. Tootoo is a first time MP, and now minister as well. He is likely to support adjacency in quota allocations in Atlantic Canada. Liberals have promised to rebuild the DFO, and restore much of the cuts from Prime Minister Harper.
Meanwhile, scientists attending a joint US-Canada lobster symposium said an anticipated increase in water temperatures in PEI could significantly increase lobster populations in the province’s waters. The report suggests warmer waters would help baby lobsters grow faster, reduce the number of predators and boost the settlement size of the lobsters.
Finally, High Liner posted another drop in sales in the third quarter, extending its lower performance results in 2015. Still, the company remains optimistic that lower raw material costs and increased retail promotions will drive growth in late 2015 and into early next year.
