The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program has added Ecaudorian farmed shrimp to its yellow list as a "Good Alternative" for consumers finding the industry's improved farming practices warrant the listing.
This is the first time Ecuadorian shrimp has been to the Seafood Watch list, which ranks seafood from red or "Avoid" to a yellow or "Good Alternative" to a green "Best Choice" list. The program is intended to help consumers and businesses choose seafood that's fished or farmed in ways that promote sustainable fish management practices.
In it's listing the Seafood Watch said "shrimp farming in Ecuador has improved over the past 50 years and is characterized by low-intensity farming. Shrimp feeds in Ecuador are used sparingly and contain low levels of fishmeal and fish oil. Overall, the environmental impacts are limited, making it a 'Good Alternative.'"
