Commercial Fishers Hit by Kimberley Marine Park Left Waiting Five Years for Compensation
As West Australian demersal fishers await state government compensation following new bans, commercial operators in the state's north fear they have been forgotten.
Sanctuary zones introduced in 2021 saw fishing banned in designated areas of the Horizontal Falls and Camden Sound marine parks off WA's Kimberley coast.
Kimberley-based commercial fisherman Mark Ainsworth, who lives aboard his boat, said the decision eliminated 50 per cent of the local fishery, tripling his overhead costs.
