Commercial Shad Season Opens on Jan. 1
The Altamaha and Savannah rivers are open to commercial shad fishing on Jan. 1, the state Department of Natural Resources announced last week.
Starting at 12 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2026, shad season is open, according to the DNR's Wildlife Resources Division. Shad season is scheduled to close at midnight on March 31, 2026.
"Though recent years haven't been as productive for shad fishermen, we are hopeful for a good shad run and abundant catches in 2026," said Jim Page, WRD senior fisheries biologist.
