Entangled Right Whales Trigger Closures as DFO, Whale Institute Outline Next Steps
A single right whale detected in the Gulf of St. Lawrence triggers an automatic 15-day closure.
In a phone interview with The Guardian on June 24, national programs fisheries resource management director Brett Gilchrist says there's a process Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) follows when whale sightings occur.
“The area that is closed is approximately 2,000 square kilometres and some (lobster) harvesters have to go with that gear and remove that gear where that whale was detected for 15 days,” he said.
