North Carolina: State Fisheries Commission Phases Out Mechanical Clam Harvesting
The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission voted 6-3 Thursday to adopt Amendment 3 to the Hard Clam Fishery Management Plan, which includes implementing a three-year phase-out of mechanical clam harvest from the public bottom, including harvests associated with maintenance dredging.
The amendment also includes a provision to explore options to estimate recreational shellfish participation and landings and to communicate necessary shellfish sanitation health and safety information to fishermen.
