Alaska's population of working fishermen is aging out. The typical fisherman working today is over 50, 10 years older than a generation ago.
The reasons for this are varied, but the ballooning cost of access to fishing permits certainly seems to be a turn off for the younger generation. Limited Entry, in all its various forms, has erected a steep entry level cost, one that new entrants are increasingly unwilling, or unable, to pay.
