Canada’s Elver Fishery Closure Doesn’t Stop Unauthorized Fishing
The elver fishery is closed in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for the 2024 season. But that hasn’t stopped poachers — just as commercial license holders have feared.
On Monday Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) confirmed that since March 6 they have arrested a total of 26 individuals suspected of unauthorized fishing. The arrests occurred in separate incidents across Southwest Nova Scotia.
