Alaska Ferries Now Tied to the Dock as Union Strikes for First Time Since 1977
The Inlandboatmen’s Union of the Pacific called a strike yesterday afternoon. The first workers walked off the ferry Columbia, moored in Ketchikan, shortly after 2 p.m. reported Jim Brooks of the Anchorage Daily News.
When other ferries in the State of Alaska’s ‘marine highway system’ arrived in port, all union members followed suit and walked off.
It is the first time the shipboard union has called a strike since 1977, Brooks reported.
