Oregon, Washington Retailers Featuring Frozen Dungeness for New Year's in Anticipation of Fresh Crab

Retailers in Oregon and Washington are planning to feature frozen Dungeness crab for the New Year holiday this week in anticipation of the arrival of fresh product sometime in early January. Reports say local stores want to clear out their remaining frozen inventories with fresh product from Oregon and Washington fishermen expected to reach processors on January 4. Meanwhile, the California fishery remains closed indefinitely with domoic acid levels—though falling-- still too high for officials to lift the fishing ban. The extended delay now has some Central California crabbers thinking about fishing for black cod to start off 2016.

Sysco has promoted Tom Bené to president and chief operating officer. Bené has been with Sysco since 2013 and was serving as executive vice president and president of its foodservice operations prior to the promotion. “Strengthening the partnership between our supply chain organization and our business operations and commercial functions under Tom’s leadership will enhance organizational alignment and better position Sysco to provide exceptional service to our customers and excellent returns to our shareholders,” said Sysco’s CEO Bill DeLaney.

In other news Vietnam’s pangasius producers were told the industry’s rampant production expansion has outpaced its access to global markets. According to Vo Hung Dung, vice chairman of the Vietnam Pangasius Association, the number of Vietnamese pangasius producers, overall fish output and production costs continue to rise, but little work has been done to expand access to alternative overseas markets. The end result has pitted producers against themselves.

Finally, just over 70 percent of Peru's 1.1 million ton commercial anchovy quota has been landed through the last week of December according to country's fishery officials. Vessels have been landing about 19,577 tons of anchovy per day since the second season opened.
