Oregon Crabbers Turn Attention to Marketing as Season Opening Looks Possible December 30th

Many crabbers, processors and retailers are concerned about regaining the public’s confidence in Dungeness crab once the season opens. And many also have plenty of ideas about ways to make that happen.
The Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission held a conference call Tuesday to discuss issues relating to marketing and promotion and ways to counter the bad press that has plagued the industry on the West Coast since November. Dungeness crab fisheries have been delayed in all three states – California, Oregon, and Washington, due to high levels of the domoic acid toxin. The last round of tests showed many areas well within safe limits.
The recent West Coast storms cleared enough on Monday and Tuesday for boats to retrieve some crab in Southern Oregon. The crab will be processed Wednesday and sent to the lab to test for levels of domoic acid; results will likely be available next week.
