Portugal and Spain Regain MSC Certification for Iberian Sardine Fishery

According to a press release from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), purse seine fishing fleets in Spain and Portugal recently regained their MSC certification for Iberian sardines, making it the first fishery to achieve this sustainability marker through such an alliance.

This joint accomplishment was made possible through coordinated efforts from the entire sector's value chain, including fishers, the processing industry and distributors.

The Iberian sardine is a key marine resource for the two European countries.

New Research Reveals 26 of 30 Largest Tuna Companies Don't Disclose Accurate Catch Data

Nonprofit financial think tank Planet Tracker just released a research report revealing that only four of the world's 30 largest tuna fishing companies disclose accurate catch data for their fishing operations.

The report, entitled “Tuna Turner: Investors Must Turn Up Transparency in the Tuna Industry,” refers to the 30 largest tuna companies as “the Tuna 30." Red Lobster Engages Middle School Students with New Ocean Sustainability Challenge

National seafood restaurant chain Red Lobster recently announced the launch of its new program, the Red Lobster Ocean Sustainability Challenge.

S&P Global Ranks Blumar as Best Fishery in Chile

S&P Global recently gave Chilean seafood producer Blumar a high rating of 73 points in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA)’s Food category.

This marks Blumar’s newly declared status as the best fishery in Chile and among the country’s top two salmon farms, ranking highest of the two in the CSA’s performance area. This is an impovement of 17 points from last year.

Thai Union Releases 2024 Sustainability Report  

Thai Union released its 2024 Sustainability Report this week, detailing its role over the last year in protecting marine ecosystems and building transparency across global seafood supply chains.

On May 22, 2025, the European Commission (EC) published its annual Blue Economy Report, detailing the current economic performance of the European Union’s (EU) blue economy sectors and providing estimates of the sectors’ future economic performance.

Global seafood company Thai Union has been ranked number one in the food products industry on the 2024 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI).
