Bama Sea Products, a Florida-based seafood processor and distributor, announced that seafood industry veteran Guy Lott has been named Chief Commercial Officer.

Alaska House Leaders Oppose Governor’s Plan to Allow Fish Farms, Dunleavy Responds in Video

The debate over whether to lift a 35-year ban on fish farms in Alaska continued yesterday. On Friday, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy proposed HB111, which would keep the ban on salmon farming but allow Alaskans to raise other finfish, in closed water systems, potentially for sale.

Brazilian Fish, part of the Ambar Amaral Group, in an interview with local media outlet Agfeed noted R$ 100 million in investments over the past 24 months to expand its tilapia production and bring new products to market.

The United States Removes Health Certificate Requirement for Brazilian Fish Exports

The United States has officially lifted the requirement for International Health Certificates (IHCs) on fish imports from Brazil, reducing bureaucracy for Brazilian exporters and potentially increasing their market competitiveness in the U.S.

BioMar’s production facility in Costa Rica recently obtained an ASC Feed Certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), marking the first certification of its kind for the Central American country.

The biggest loser in the global tariff wars that have erupted in seafood will be American consumers, importers, processors and distributors.

This week Pres. Trump unilaterally imposed 25% tariffs on all Canadian seafood.  This covers almost all the snow crab, 55% of domestic live lobster, and about 50% of whole farmed Atlantic salmon consumed in the US.

Ecuador and Mexico Clash Over Shrimp Trade and Tariff Disputes

On Monday, February 3, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa declared that Ecuador would be applying a 27% tariff on all Mexican goods in order to promote fair treatment of Ecuadorian companies.

The Retail Rundown: Robust Retail Spending This Holiday Season

Retail spending has been robust this year, with recent data released by the U.S. Census Bureau indicating strong retail sales as the holiday season kicked off in November.

According to the Census Bureau, overall retail sales in November rose 0.7 percent month-over-month (MOM) and increased 3.8 percent year-over-year (YOY) In comparison, October saw gains of 0.5 percent MOM and 2.9 percent YOY.

A Look at the Top 10 Most Consumed Seafood Items in 2022

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) debuted its annual Top 10 List of the most consumed seafood in 2022. NFI’s list comes shortly after NOAA Fisheries unveiled its Fisheries of the U.S. 2022 Report, which saw Americans consume roughly 19.7 pounds of seafood, a slight downturn from the 20.5 pounds seen in 2021.

UK’s Seafish: Signs of Recovery in Trade, Consumer Confidence After Five Tough Years

Marcus Coleman, CEO of Seafish told industry leaders at the ongoing annual Responsible Seafood Summit that after five years of global challenges to the seafood industry, a turnaround may be happening this year.
