18 Feed Mills Achieve ASC Certification So Far in 2025 

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Certification program is gaining global momentum as key players within the seafood industry ramp up production of responsibly sourced aquafeed.  

Between January and mid-July 2025, 18 feed mills in 12 countries, including Norway, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, have achieved certification under the ASC Feed Standard.  

For the first time, feed mills (all operated by Skretting) in Australia, Japan, and Italy have earned ASC certification.

BioMar More Than Doubles Vitamin D Levels in All Salmon Feeds 

Aquaculture feed company BioMar has sgnifantly increased vitamin D3 levels across all salmon diets. The move follows regulatory changes in the European Union (EU), which raised the maximum permissible level of vitamin D3 in fish feed from 2,500IU/kg to 60,000 IU/kg. 

In response, BioMar’s R&D team in Denmark conducted a study to evaluate the impact of enhanced vitamin D3 supplementation in salmon diets.

Skretting Leads Project to Boost New Zealand’s King Salmon Exports 

Global aquafeed company Skretting is partnering with the New Zealand government on a new initiative to boost King salmon exports.  

Trade Minister Todd McClay has announced a $455,000 investment to support the development of specialized feed tailored specifically for New Zealand’s King salmon. 

“This funding comes from the Primary Sector Growth Fund, announced in Budget 2025 to support forward-leaning, high-impact projects that will drive productivity, innovation and export growth across the sector,” said McClay.

Mexico Aims to Boost Tilapia Self-Sufficiency by 2030  

Mexico is aiming to achieve full self-sufficiency in tilapia production by 2030, according to an announcement from Julio Berdegué, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. 

Berdegué shared the goal during “The Future of Tilapia in Mexico” forum, hosted by the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca).  

Currently, Mexico’s aquaculture sector is made up of roughly 81,000 workers, with around 45,000 involved in tilapia production. Of those, 90% are small-scale operations.

New Study Finds Minimal Impact of BC Net Pen Salmon Farms on Wild Populations

A new peer-reviewed study suggests net pen salmon farms in British Columbia have minimal impact on the region’s wild salmon populations.

New Report Finds Aquaculture Could Create More Than 20 Million Jobs By 2050 

Aquaculture could generate as many as 22 million jobs by 2050, according to a new report from the World Bank and the World Wildlife Fund.

NAIA and Coast of Bays Communities Team up to Oppose N.L. Marine Conservation Area

On June 23, 2025, the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) launched its ‘Save South Coast Jobs’ campaign, which rejects the recently proposed National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) and focuses on the potential impact to local community leaders and workers along Newfoundland and Labrador’s (NL) South Coast.

Norcod Secures Approval for New 3500 MT Cod Farming Site

Norwegian cod farmer Norcod has landed permission to create a new production site in the Meløy municipality with a total MAB (maximum allowed biomass) of 3,599 metric tons.

Sustainable Shrimp Partnership Develops Living Wage Program for Ecuadorian Shrimp Farms

The Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) said its latest initiative would set “a new benchmark for social responsibility in shrimp aquaculture.”

Aquaticode Expands AI Sorting Tech with Major Chilean Salmon Farming Deals

Andfjord Salmon’s Q1 Results Reflect Low Production and Zero Revenue Amid Kvalnes Build-Out

Norwegian salmon producer Andfjord Salmon Group AS recently released its financial results for Q1 2025, indicating stalled profits amid the company’s ongoing construction at its facility in Kvalnes, Norway.

Kenyan Tilapia Farmer Victory Farms Joins ASC Improvement Program

Nova Scotia: 22 Seafood Companies Receive $1.75 Million in Climate Change Funding 

The Government of Canada has announced that 22 seafood companies and organizations in Nova Scotia will receive $1.73 million in climate change funding through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Energy Efficiency Innovation Fund.

Center for Food Safety Sues to Shut Down Nine Shellfish Aquaculture Sites in Washington 

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) and a local Washington organization against shellfish farming, have filed a motion in federal court to shut down nine coastal shellfish operations in Washington.

Japan: Fisheries and Aquaculture Production Hit New Low in 2024, Fourth Consecutive Year of Decline 

According to a May 27 announcement by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the production volume of fishery and aquaculture in 2024 was 3,634,800 tons - a 5.1% decrease of 195,000 tons from 2023. This is the lowest figure since the survey began in 1951.
