Maritime Officials Back Alliance Between Ports of Seattle and Tacoma

Federal maritime officials said they would allow an alliance between the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, Wash., to move forward after determining the partnership wouldn't increase costs or reduce service at the two largest marine ports in the U.S. Northwest.
The Northwest Seaport Alliance, as it is known, will become the third-largest trade gateway in North America, after the Southern California ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the Northeast ports of New York and New Jersey.
“The Pacific Northwest is a key region for inbound and outbound United States cargo," Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Mario Cordero said in a statement Wednesday. “This alliance will help the region remain competitive into the future."
