University of British Columbia Reports on World's Undercounted Catch, Starting With Australia

Australian fisheries are in remarkably good health, even though official statistics have underestimated the catch by almost half, a global study has found.
But Canadian marine biologist Daniel Pauly says Australia’s fish stocks will be decimated if it allows freezer factory trawlers into its waters.
“Your country has a light footprint on the ocean,” said Dr Pauly, who is visiting Sydney. “Given that there is a crisis of fisheries all over the world, why would you want to join the madness?” Dr Pauly, a zoology professor at the University of British Columbia, has spearheaded a 16-year project to tally the world’s true fish catch.
