Virginia's Aquaculture Oyster, Clam Harvests Set Records

Mike Manyak has been expanding his oyster aquaculture business in Heathsville ever since he started Sapidus Farms in 2009.
Last year’s crop of 100,000 oysters was a nearly 30 percent increase over 2013. This year he expects to harvest 150,000.
“I’m at my limit right now for what I can produce,” he said during a stop between deliveries to restaurants in Maryland. “If I had more oysters, I’m sure I could pick up more accounts with no problem.”
Virginia shellfish farmers such as Manyak sold $55.9 million in oysters and clams last year. That’s an increase of 14 percent...
