Chile and Argentina will develop a surveillance strategy to tackle IUU king crab fishing in the Beagle channel.
A meeting was held between Argentine Under Secretary Eduardo Bauducco and Chilean fishery officials where implementing a satellite monitoring system and other management measures was discussed. The goal was to unify the two countries on control measures to curb illegal crab fishing.
In attendance were Chile's Deputy Director of Fisheries Jorge Antonio Da Ponte Toro; Zonal Director of Punta Arenas, Gonzalo Rubilar; the provincial head of Chilean Antarctica based in Puerto Williams, Diego Illanes.
Reports said the officials found "a genuine and mutual interest in finding solutions" to the IUU crab problem.
