West Australian Rock Lobster Industry Flourishing with High Asian Demand and Robust Landings

Large catches exceeding three tonne a day for a single operator are satisfying the high demand for WA rock lobster for the Chinese New Year and contributing to the strong beach price.
The Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative is paying an average of $62.63/kg for rock lobster under a split pricing system.
The low Australian dollar is also contributing to the strong beach price, making WA rock lobster more affordable for Chinese consumers.
Western Rock Lobster Council chief executive John McMath confirmed there were “huge amounts” of rock lobster being caught “over the edge”.
