Following steep decline new protections for sea turtles showing dramatic recovery is possible

Nearly all sea turtle species have been classified as endangered, with precipitous declines in many populations in recent decades. But new protections, particularly in the U.S. and Central America, are demonstrating that dramatic recovery for these remarkable reptiles is possible.
While there’s cause for despair, there’s also cause for hope. The main source of that hope is the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) under which all sea turtles are protected. It has set a global example, inspiring action by some other nations, particularly in the Western Hemisphere. And in the U.S., the act has mandated mitigation measures for the main sources of sea-turtle mortality and established draconian penalties for harming sea turtles.
