Maryland DNR seafood marketing program gets chefs acquainted with local crab and oysters

Chefs, seafood wholesalers and culinary educators recently traveled across the Chesapeake Bay to see oyster beds and crabmeat being picked.
The trip on a chartered fishing boat from Solomons Island to Hooper's Island wasn't a sightseeing expedition. The state-sponsored voyage was designed to show the bounties that reside in the bay and emphasize the value of locally harvested seafood.
Once on Hooper's Island, Jones and the others were able to see crab picking operations at W.T. Ruark and Co., followed by a visit to Hoopers Island Oyster Aquaculture Co.
DNR's Fisheries Marketing Program, led by Steve Vilnit, is underwritten by the watermen. They pay a seafood marketing surcharge on their license that pays for the entire program...
