Letters: Coverage of Pacific council left out discussion of some major issues

Dear Peggy –
I appreciated your report on the September Pacific Council meeting (
9/25/14 Seafood.com) but I believe a little bit of perspective is in order.
While the electronic monitoring (EM) action is important, it is only one more step in a long process before becoming reality. While EM is likely to move forward more rapidly for the whiting fishery – which has several years’ experience with it - the motions for electronic monitoring of the fixed gear and bottom trawl fisheries specifically provide that nothing will move forward until results from the current experimental fisheries are obtained and analyzed.
At the same time, you made no mention of the serious concerns expressed by the Council's Groundfish Advisory Subpanel and the public over the functioning of the trawl individual quota program (
more info here) and its effect on the economic viability of the trawl groundfish fishery....
