Letters: Consumer reports did not suggest pregnant women eat less fish
SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Letters] Aug 25, 2014
Dear Mr. Sackton,
The recommendation is not about eating less fish, just specifically tuna. This is because tuna, and some other top predators like swordfish, accumulate very high levels of mercury which is a potent neurotoxin that can impair nervous system and brain development at low levels.
I have studied its effects on fish, but am aware of a number of epidemiological studies on humans.
It is a sound recommendation for pregnant women to avoid exposing their developing fetuses to such a harmful chemical.
Sincerely,
Judith S. Weis,
