Concern is spreading over supply of crab in Japan as anti-poaching treaty takes effect

Battles are now underway among Japan, Russia, Korea and China over plentiful fishery resources in the Far East, with the repercussions keenly felt in Hokkaido, the main seafood supply region in Japan.
"It is good for conservation of the resources that crab stock management in the Okhotsk Sea returns to normal," said Ichiro Sasabuchi, 79, chief of a seafood processing firm that deals live snow crab from Russia, at its office in Monbetsu, overlooking the Okhotsk Sea in early March.
But, he also expressed a serious concern that local seafood processors cannot foresee what will happen to crab supply volume or to the crab market in the days ahead.
