FDA developing DNA barcode system that identifies individual commercial fish species

After years of effort to have the FDA take seriously the issues of seafood substitution and seafood fraud, the agency is rapidly moving to incorporate fish identification tecniques into its enforcement and inspection operations.  The FDA has come to agree with industry that deliberate subsitution is often a safety risk, as well as an economic fraud.  So the effort put into integrating the DNA 'barcode of life' into the FDA's fish identification practices is a very positive development.   

What difference does DNA testing make?  Well if you have wondered if that "wild caught" salmon is actually wild, or if the domestic catfish was really grown in the USA, or if that "red snapper" is actually red snapper and worth the premium price, rapid and simple DNA testing can provide an answer.
