Superior Salmon Selected
Selectively bred super salmon designed to better withstand the conditions of Tasmanian waters has been created for the first time.
The new generation of salmon, currently being held in freshwater nurseries, will enter seas in February.
Geneticists at aquaculture companies Tassal and Huon designed the salmon with the aim of making them more resistant to warmer waters and the P. salmonis bacteria, which caused mass salmon deaths between January and April.
