Real Battle Over Harmful Fishing Subsidies Looms After WTO Deal

After two decades of negotiations, the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) fisheries subsidies agreement has finally come into force, but thorny issues such as overfishing remain unresolved.
Two-thirds of WTO members have now ratified the international agreement, which dates back to 2001 but was finalised in 2022. It bans subsidies for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and aims to curb overfishing, with the WTO calling it its first agreement to put sustainability “at its core.”
