New Investigation Alleges ‘Shrimp Fraud’ in Wilmington Area
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A new report is alleging restaurants in the Wilmington area are committing “shrimp fraud” by misleading customers into thinking they’re buying local shrimp, when it’s actually imported – usually from other countries.
The study, commissioned by the Southern Shrimp Alliance – a Florida-based nonprofit – was released April 29. Through technology company SEAD Consulting, shrimp at 44 restaurants in Wilmington, Belville, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach were analyzed.
