Guam bottomfish fishermen are facing a good news/bad news situation and scientists are weighing in to help them out.
The Guam bottomfish fishery was declared overfished in 2018, necessitating the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and National marine Fisheries Service devise a plan to rebuild the stock.
The good news: A June 2024 stock assessment update showed the fishery is no longer overfished.
