Iceland Volcano Erupts After Weeks of “Nervous Wait”
After weeks of warnings from the Icelandic Meteorological Office that an eruption was imminent, it happened at 9 p.m. local time yesterday when magma broke through the rocky earth along a two-mile long fissure down the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The eruption started a few kilometers from Grindavík, a fishing town located about 25 miles south-west of Iceland's capital, Reykjavík. Grindavik was evacuated after a series of intense swarm earthquakes hit the area. Residents were allowed back to their homes during the day...
