Today's Top Story: Murray Agrees to Evaluate Possible Merge of 3L Inshore, Offshore Snow Crab Areas Into One Biomass
After nearly a week of protests, 3L crab fishermen received a welcomed letter from Minister Joyce Murray on Friday. Minister Murray wrote in a letter to FFAW-Unifor President Greg Pretty that there is “flexibility afforded” by the precautionary approach framework that will be considered in 2023 season management decisions. Minister Murray cited the following from the precautionary approach framework: “If consistent with advice provided at the annual stock assessment, when a stock is in the healthy zone and when there are high levels of residual biomass present, the exploitation rate can temporarily exceed the Upper Removal Reference of 42%.”
