20-Year-Old North Atlantic Right Whale Dead on Virginia Beach
Another endangered North Atlantic right whale (NARW) has died.
According to reports, the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response team was alerted to a dead NARW that washed up on Virginia Beach on February 12. The whale, a 20-year-old, 43-foot male, has been identified as catalog #3343.
A spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries’ Northeast Fisheries Science Center told climate and environment reporter Eve Zuckoff that this is the fourth large whale to strand in Virginia this year, but the first NARW this year in the state.
