Indian Ocean Tuna Commission Draws Ire of Nations, Industry, and NGOs on Yellowfin Tuna
The Indian Ocean’s yellowfin tuna is currently the most overfished tuna stock in the world. In 2016, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) adopted a resolution reducing the fishing allowance of the species by 15 percent to help rebuild the population. After five days of negotiations, IOTC members were only able to reach agreement to limit catch to 400,512mt. That catch level is 61,000mt above a level agreed to by the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA), an industry group.
