B.C. Trading Company Hit with $60,000 Fine for Illegal Shark Fin Imports
British Columbia-based trading company Kiu Yick Trading Co. Ltd was sentenced to pay a CA$60,000 fine for the illegal importation of a threatened shark species.
An investigation by Environment and Climate Change Canada found that Kiu Yick Trading had unlawfully imported several thousand Carcharhinus falciformis (silky shark) fins as part of a large importation of dried shark fins from Hong Kong. The silky shark fins are a species protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)...
